Lotus Word Pro 97 Grammar Checker analysis.
Method
Like Grammatik, the
Grammar Checker in Lotus Word Pro 97 gives a lot of
data with the results from the Bormuth analysis of
the Proof of Evidence (POE) failing to show much
variation. As before, the scope for experimental
error is too great for such a small sample of words
as exists in a single paragraph of text only the
results with a more significant variation are
displayed below in Table
1.
The document as a whole was pasted into Lotus Word
Pro 97 and the grammar checker was used to analyse
the text with all of the results being written down.
Each paragraph was then analysed and noted in the
same way.

Table 1
- The Flesch Grade Level is the Flesch Reading
Ease Score translated into a grade level.
- The Coleman-Liau Grade Level Indicates the
grade level of the document based upon the
average number of letters per word and the
number of sentences per 100 words.
- The Bormuth Grade Level indicates the grade
level of the document based upon the average
number of letters per word and per sentence.
According to teh help pages in the word
processor, this score ranges from 6.3 to 11.6
- note that the graph shows that it goes
above this for a number of paragraphs.
- The Flesch-Kincaid Score indicates the grade
level of the document based upon the number
of syllables per word and number of words per
sentence. This score predicts the difficulty
of reading technical documents (of which
this is certainly one), and is based
upon Navy training manuals that score in
difficulty from 5.5 to 16.3. It meets
military readability specifications
MIL-M-38784 and DOD-STD-1685. Again, this
score is exceeded by this document.
Inferences
The Bormuth grade does not vary much
(remembering that the graph has a false zero and
therefore any variations will be exagerated to some
extent) However, the striking variation in the
Flesch-Kincaid and the Flesch Grade indicate within
the limitations of the sample size that paragraphs 1,
2, 7, 13 and 14 are different to the rest.
The Flesch-Kincaid score is of
particular interest as this confoms to military and
DoD specifications - in addition, it shows the widest
variation. Paragraphs 1 and 2 set up the statement,
giving background detail and paragraph 7 deals with
the contentous fact of intimidation. Paragraphs 13
and 14 deal with the specific events concerning the
goings on in the appeal hearing thus all of these 5
paragraphs are of particular importance and are
particularly likely to have had their content
influenced in detail by a solicitor or other legally
trained individual.
These tests indicate that at least
two people wrote the POE of which one had legal
training.
