Netherlandish cat wearing armour, holding heraldic shield and standing in countryside in front of wall. Early pigments oils on quarter-sawn solid oak panel with sunken field - mordant gilded on pastiglia 24 carat gold leaf and pure silver leaf with a woven pastiglia border with animal figures in each corner and mordant gilded tin leaf with pastiglia banderole with lettering. Note that Dennis' tail is armoured and that it intrudes into the real world from the world of images. Like many icons, this has a red border and in this case, it is rose madder and minium so it, along with the red and gold brocade in the helmet, fluoresce orange in ultraviolet light. |
